The
aim of the sixth International Conference on Mesomechanics is to provide an
international forum for scientists of different countries and disciplines (mathematicians,
physicists and engineers) to discuss on the fundamentals of multiscaling in
mechanics, to validate their effects on applied science and emerging
technologies, to exploit the previous experience and to discuss ways for the
direct application of mesomechanics in applied science and emerging technologies.
It has been long recognized that many of the properties of materials involve
different scales and that any modeling effort should explicitly acknowledge the
role of more than a single relevant length or time scale in the problem of
interest. Each scale involves phenomena and characteristic parameters that can
be either treated discretely or collectively. Mesomechanics considers the
simultaneous interaction of different scale levels and attempts to bridge the
gap in the length scale by developing modeling strategies based on distinctive
physical features or mechanisms that operate on a particular scale and
projecting these information over a chain of nesting scales.
One of the aims of this international conference is to discuss the effect of spatial and temporal scaling on the material properties as well as on the performance and failure of structures and how mesomechanics based models can be used for the solution of problems in applied science and the development of new technologies. The topics to be covered include (but not restricted to): dependency of engineering materials properties on length and time scales, consideration of different scale levels to understand physical features and mechanisms, new modeling strategies, mesofracture mechanics and engineering applications of mesomechanics.
Prospective
authors are invited to submit an abstract of 500-1000 words, not exceeding two
pages in length (including diagrams and/or tables).
All abstracts stating objectives, main results and conclusions of the
paper will be reviewed by members of the Scientific Committee. Accepted final
papers will appear in the conference programme and will be included in the
conference proceedings.
Please register your attendance by returning the reply form. Instructions for the preparation of abstracts and manuscripts are provided here.
Abstracts
must be in Microsoft Word format only, and should be sent in electronic form as
soon as possible and no later than

International
Society for MESOMECHANICS
The International Society of Mesomechanics (ISM) was found in 1996 and the first biennial conference was held in Russia. Since then four additional meetings have taken place: one in Israel (1998), one in China (2000) one in Denmark (2002) and another in Japan (2003). These meetings have attracted scientists, engineers, researchers and academics around the world to meet and discuss the need for emphasizing the spatial and temporal scaling of physical events at the atomic, microscopic and macroscopic levels in addition to those that are in between the aforementioned scales and to determine how the results are interconnected.
One
of the aims of ISM is to foster the foregoing activities in the fields of
Applied Mechanics, Applied Physics and Materials Science including the
multidisciplinary aspects by means of international conferences and symposia.
Any
person with an interest in science and technology and being a graduate in
engineering or mathematics or related other sciences can become an Individual
Member. Organizations engaged or having an interest for the advancement of
science, engineering and product manufacturing can become Institutional Members.
The Individual Membership fee is US$ 50. Please tick the appropriate box on the Reply Form to become a member of ISM. Further information can be found on the ISM web site.

A paper will be accepted only if one of its authors is committed to present the paper in the Conference.
Authors that contribute to more than one paper, may present a maximum of two papers in the Conference, provided this will be expressed during the submission of the full-length paper.
Only papers presented in the Conference (according to the above two terms) will appear in the proceedings.
A person can be co-author in a maximum number of four papers.

Patras is the third largest city in Greece, the main harbor to western Europe and the location of a number of events of the Olympic Games 2004. The conference will take place 2 months before the Olympic Games when a lot of cultural events are expected in Patras and in nearby Delphi, Epidauros and Olympia, in the frame of the Cultural Olympics.
A number of social events are planned during the conference for both participants and accompanying persons. The events include visits to Olympia, Delphi, Epidauros and the nearby Ionian islands. Social events and accommodation information will be available in due time on the conference web site.
Those
who wish to have their full papers published in the Theoretical and Applied
Fracture Mechanics journal, please state so in the cover letter. An early
submission is recommended to allow for review time. Submit 2 hard copies plus
